How to Wear ...

high-shine fabrics

If the thoughts of wearing PVC clothing conjures up images of fetish wear, then it's time for a re-think -- high-shine fabrics are enjoying their moment in the fashion spotlight, having taken centre stage on this season's catwalks.

At Burberry, Christopher Bailey revisited and reconfigured the classics, producing trench coats in sheer latex and pencil skirts in translucent rubber. At Topshop Unique, the high street behemoth embraced all things glossy with high-shine coats, trousers and skirts. A sophisticated take on patent was also seen at House of Holland, Kenzo and our very own Simone Rocha.

The strong presence on the catwalks has filtered down to the high street and wearing the trend is not half as difficult as you might imagine it to be. It's about keeping outfits visually pared back, so don't get carried away and try to stick with a fairly classic silhouette.

For instance, take a demure pleated midi-skirt that has been given a modern look in a high-gloss fabric and work it into an outfit of mixed textures. Think a cropped sweater in fuzzy mohair, layered over a silk shirt. Balance the kink with a cute pair of flats or a kitten heel for a more refined look.
