How to Wear ...

Ankle boots

The ever-faithful ankle boot rocked the Autumn/Winter catwalks for 2013/14. From uber cool cut-outs and ladylike shapes to tough biker styles and borrowed-from-your-boyfriend looks, ankle boots appeared in abundance in many guises from Acne to Givenchy.

Saint Laurent championed a punk/grunge approach with roughened-up hardware, while at Chloe there was a softer look with laces and strap detailing. Some of the most elegant, and wearable it must be said, were to be found at Celine, who kept it dainty with soft shapes, rounded toes and block heels in muted tones.

Finding the right pair might take some time, but it's worth persisting because when you do, you'll have bagged yourself a seriously hard-working wardrobe staple.

For an ultra-adaptable shoe, a heeled ankle boot in black or nude is a must-have. Style with a day dress layered under a lightweight knit, tights and a blazer for a cool and comfortable office look. For an off-duty style with leg-lengthening appeal, keep it simple by pairing black heeled ankle boots with black jeans, a silk top and an oversized cardigan for instant insouciant chic.

Short, curvier women should go for low-cut boots that don't cut the leg above the ankle. When wearing with skirts or dresses, be careful not to shorten your legs by wearing anything longer than knee-length.
