How to dress like the stars
Our guide to getting Rihanna and Alexa Chung's looks for less.
Young fashionistas are splashing out more than €100 a month on emulating their favourite stars a new survey has found. Almost half of those aged 16 to 25 spend around €120 every four weeks in a bid to look like they're famous.
Meanwhile, more than four out of 10 youngsters admitted to suffering 'Insta-envy' – jealously of their friends' or celebrities' wardrobes, brought on by Instagram snaps.
Although she doesn't use Instagram, Lena Zellerhoff, who lives in Dublin, admits she regularly pours over the glossies for style inspiration.
"Sometimes it's good to try something new," says Lena (25), a plus-size model who's signed to Andrea Roche Model Agency.
"And celebrities are good for getting ideas, before you splash out.
"I probably spend around €100 a month on clothes."
"As a curvy girl, I think Kim Kardashian is a great dresser and always try to accentuate my waist, just like her."
Here, Lena shows how to morph into Kim, Rihanna or Alexa on a budget.
Chung wans all over the world get their wardrobe inspiration from It girl Alexa. And the British model and presenter, in turn, says she models herself on style icon Diane Keaton. Annie Hall-style shirts, carry-alls and brogues are key to stealing both Diane's and Alexa's androgynous style.
But the 30-year-old never misses an opportunity to flash her Bambi-like pins in denim cut-offs either. Alexa-likes need look no further than her Instagram feed to find out how to dress exactly like their favourite star.
She even penned her own book of tips, titled 'It', last year. "I turned on the TV and I saw someone wearing a Peter Pan-collared dress and loafers and a bob," joked Alexa about her army of style clones. "Can you imagine how happy I am that everyone looks exactly as I want them to?"
Lena wears: military coat €94, denim skirt €44, heart-collar jumper €47, satchel bag €35, leather brogue boots €85, all from Oasis.
Reality star Kim Kardashian's wardrobe is surprisingly classy.
Despite being famous for her killer 34-26-39 curves, the mum-of-one rarely wears anything above the knee, although her neckline has been known to plunge south from time to time.
Money is no object for the fashionista, who received a priceless hand-painted Birkin handbag from fiancé Kanye West for Christmas, so stick to the higher end of the high street.
From walking the dog to walking the red carpet, Kim is always paparazzi-ready in a classic wiggle dress, accessorised with her 15-carat diamond engagement ring rumoured to be worth US$6 million, of course.
No wonder the 33-year-old recently admitted she dresses for her man: "You want your guy to think you're really hot. I'll put something on and he'll say, 'No, that doesn't look good', and I'll trust him." With a cold snap on the way, fur fan Kim is sure to once again risk the wrath of PETA.
Unless you want to wind up being flour-bombed just like the star, however, copy-Kims may want to fake it while keeping up with this particular Kardashian.
Lena wears: Coast faux fur jacket €160, Coast lace dress €159, Karen Millen gold sandals €130, Karen Millen gold clutch €89.95.
When it comes to style, pop queen Rihanna is definitely a Good Girl Gone Bad. The Barbadian beauty first shot to fame as a denim-clad teen. Today, the 25-year-old is better known for what she's not wearing than what she is.
But if there's one rule for dressing like Oh-na-na-what's-her-name, it's that there are no rules: think clashing prints, bucket-loads of bling and 'man-repeller' footwear. In the past year alone, the style chameleon has gone from grunge – celebrating her birthday in London in leather pants and a beanie – to gorgeous, rocking a custom-made Azzedine Alaia frock at the Grammys. And that's not to mention her ever-changing barnet.
Revealing the unlikely inspiration for her bad-girl image, she told: "My love for fashion started with my mom. I used to watch her get dressed. She was around my age right now, and she was so fly."
RiRi's design collaboration with River Island has made it easy for fans here to follow in her footsteps so far. But as she's the new face of Balmain, however, you'd better start saving!
Lena wears: Pink Flamingo bodycon dress €37, leopard print platform ankle boots €80, turban-style headband €8, statement necklace €25, cross charm hoop earrings €10, all from River Island.
