Handbags at dawn as stores gear up for sales
THEY'RE two of women's favourite things -- sales and handbags.
And one store is hoping that a combination of the two will bring them a stampede of shoppers first thing on St Stephen's Day.
Arnotts, on Dublin's Henry Street, is launching its traditional winter sale at 9am on the second day of Christmas and is offering up to 70pc off handbags in their newly revamped accessories section.
Unlike the last two years when they brought in 'X Factor' celebrity acts Jedward and Mary Byrne to entertain the waiting crowds, Arnotts are dropping the showbiz showstopper and relying on discounts of 50pc across clothes, accessories, technology and homewares to secure their share of the retail cake.
"Stocks are limited so it is anticipated that there will be handbags at dawn to secure the best deals on offer," said Lisa Kavanagh, retail director.
The main ammunition in their handbag war will be Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Guess, Love Moschino, Vivienne Westwood, Lonchamp and Coach, the luxury American brand which Arnotts introduced early this year.
Meanwhile, over on O'Connell Street, Clerys is also planning a 9am sales start on December 26.
And in keeping with tradition, they are offering a number of 9am opening bargains.
Temptations include a 5ft 'Sleep Spa' storage divan set worth €1,999 for just €1 and there is one 5ft Silentnight Ortho Backcare storage divan set worth €1,349, also on sale for €1.
Television fans might just get out of bed early in order to try and scoop the one Blue Diamond 32in HD Ready Saorview Approved LCD TV worth €349.99 which is selling for €99. House-proud shoppers can avail of 70pc off readymade curtains.
With three days of shopping left, stores nationwide are pulling out all the stops to facilitate shoppers.
In Dublin, the Dundrum Town Centre is remaining open until 11pm tonight and tomorrow.
