Gone, to the most stylish bidder: Carey Mulligan's Met Ball Prada dress sells on eBay
Carey Mulligan's custom-made Prada Met Ball dress sells for $2,950 on eBay.
As co-host of the 2012 Met Ball to mark the opening of the Costume Institute of New York's Prada and Schiaparelli exhibition, British actress Carey Mulligan was guaranteed a knockout gown to wear, and her sequin bedecked Prada dress did not disappoint.
Now, rather than being packed carefully away in her attic to avoid the shame of ever being spotted in the same look twice (Hollywood suicide) someone somewhere in the world will be getting their chance to shine in the custom-made dress after winning it on eBay. And it's all in a good cause.
An Education star Mulligan kindly donated the Prada design to Oxfam America to sell on the US version of the online auction site. After attracting 35 bids, it sold for the rather bargain sum of $2,950 (£1,870).
An instant hit with fashion critics and across social media, Mulligan gushed that she was "really honoured" to be wearing the space age gold and silver pailette design reminiscent of fish scales to the fashion world's biggest night out of the year.
Although the new owner will be hard-pressed to find anywhere quite so glamorous to debut the design, she will no doubt look every bit as spectacular.
