From college campus into a luxury retailer in one move, Heather Gilroy has scooped a remarkable fashion opportunity.

The 22-year-old NCAD student, from Balbriggan, Co Dublin, has won this year's Brown Thomas Designer to Watch bursary, a coveted industry prize which fast-tracks students into the heart of the retail fashion world.

Ms Gilroy was selected by Brown Thomas fashion director Shelly Corkery, who spent last Friday at NCAD's Thomas Street campus, poring over the work of 20 graduating students from the fashion design course.

The 'Designer to Watch' prize comprises a €4,000 cash bursary, a mentoring programme with Brown Thomas's retail divisions plus a high-profile installation of the winner's work in the CREATE showcase in the Grafton Street store in July.

In her graduate collection entitled 'Among the Flat Pink Roses', Heather sets out to celebrate modern femininity.
