Designer Rick Owens says he punched model for holding 'Kill Angela Merkel' poster on runway
Rick Owens has punched a model at his Spring/Summer 16 show.
The designer is known for his outrageous catwalks, famously putting men's genitals on display during his Autumn 2015 display. He presented his latest men's offering in Paris this morning, but was left furious when a model - who WWD has named as Jera - took the opportunity to protest as he strutted his stuff.
He held up a banner saying "Please Kill Angela Merkel - Not", in reference to the German chancellor. This did not sit well with Rick, who spoke to Dazed Digital about what went on.
"I think it says Kill Angela Merkel or something? Is that what it said? I don’t know because it was not my idea. He pulled it out and I punched him when he came off stage," he fumed.
"He’s been my male muse for the past 12 years or something and I think he just felt comfortable enough to do something in a show and I’m furious."
He added to WWD: "It’s a crazy, rogue, f**king model that I punched when he came back out. Please say that I punched him.”
Rick's latest collection is based around the idea of male aggression, making him even more irritated about what happened.
"Whenever I think about men’s collections I always think about the idea of aggression because it’s just part of a man’s DNA and it’s something that I struggle with and I think other men do too,” he explained to Dazed Digital. “Like, when does ambition and efficiency spill over into aggression? And this model just gave into his aggression, and his balance was off. He became imbalanced. His aggression took over."
He was very clear that the incident was not planned, something which was backed up in an official statement released by his design house. The company called it an "independent statement" which in no way reflects the ethos of the brand.
