The Met Gala is the most exclusive event in the New York social calendar, but US president Donald Trump is no longer welcome.
The US President and his wife Melania have been staples at the Costume Institute's annual ball to raise funds for the Met’s Anna Wintour Costume Center, as well as his daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner. Even his first wife Ivana made two appearances in the mid noughties. The first family brought their usual understated style of magenta fishtail ballgowns and bejewelled bodycon dresses to the event, but after nearly 13 years, the president won't be invited to return and by default, presumably the first lady.
Anna Wintour, US Vogue Editor-in-Chief, is chair of the event since 1995 and made it clear he's no longer welcome. While appearing on James Corden's Late Late show on Wednesday night, Wintour took part in a Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts segment, when she was given the option of eating pickled pigs feet or naming a celebrity she'd never invite back.
"Donald Trump," she quipped straight away.
The fashion icon was an active supporter of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, during which time Vogue endorsed the candidate.
"Obviously we felt it was a moment in history for women. At times like that you need to take a leadership position…. To me, it was in support of women," she told the Wall Street Journal at the time.
In February, Wintour was asked whether Melania would be featuring on the pages of the style bible (she appeared on the cover in February 2005) with exclusive coverage of her wedding), and said this term wouldn't be any differnet.
"We have a tradition of always covering whoever is the first lady at Vogue and I can’t imagine that this time would be any different," she said.
The Met Gala is still one of the most coveted tickets in town each May with tickets costing an average of $30,000 and tables range in price from $275,000 to $500,000; but being able to afford doesn't mean you're invited - the fashion editor runs a strict guestlist filled with preferred designers and A-list celebrities of her choosing.
