Amal Alamuddin stuns in Giambattista Valli dress, but wedding gown still a mystery
We're still none the wiser as to what exactly Amal Alamuddin chose to wear to wed George Clooney on Giudecca Island, Venice on Saturday - despite rumours that she'd opted for an Alexander McQueen design - but if the outfits that we have been privy to are anything to go by, it was bound to be impressive.
The newlywed lawyer made her first public appearance since tying the knot as she boarded a boat wearing a beautiful mini dress by Italian couturier Giambattista Valli, hand embellished with peach and purple beaded blossom. The dress appeared on the catwalk in January as part of the designer's autumn/winter 2014 Haute Couture collection, and as a made-to-measure piece it would likely have cost tens of thousands of pounds.
On Friday evening, September 26, the then bride-to-be was spotted wearing a stepped-hem scarlet Alexander McQueen dress to attend a pre-wedding dinner with friends and family - making us think she perhaps hadn't chosen the British design house to create her wedding gown afterall, and that her trips to the McQueen offices in London were in fact to do with the pre-wedding dress.
The happy couple have been joined by a guestlist bursting at the seams with stars for the three-day celebration - from Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber, to Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Bono and Anna Wintour - who is rumoured to have secured publication of the wedding photos in an upcoming issue of American Vogue in return for a charitable donation. Thus, we expect we will have to wait until then to get a glimpse of the all important wedding gown.
It is thought the editor-in-chief may have had significant input into the sartorial side of the day, with Australian designer Johanna Johnson confirming that she was asked to design a dress for Ms Alamuddin's best friend, Jennifer Robinson, by Vogue.
"It's been my great honour to have been requested by Vogue to work on the wedding of Mr George Clooney and his bride, Ms Amal Alamuddin, to dress Ms Jennifer Robinson, best friend and confidante of the bride," Johnson said of her "private and confidential" project to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Alamuddin is rumoured to have a bulging designer wardrobe with her for the festivities, which also includes an outfit by Stella McCartney, reports WWD, who add that Oscar de la Renta, famed for his beautiful gowns, is currently the frontrunner in the wedding dress designer stakes.
It is expected that the couple will have an official civil ceremony at Venice's City Hall on Monday, September 29, in line with Italian law.
