It is an unforgettable moment in cinematic history: Marlene Dietrich, in her debut appearance on American screens, emerges wearing a top hat, tuxedo and white bow-tie.
Her performance as cabaret singer Amy Jolly in the 1930 classic Morocco was subsequently nominated for an Oscar - but it was her striking attire that really made a lasting impact: Dietrich and the trouser suit became synonymous.
This year, Amal Alamuddin wowed in Stella McCarthy; Angelina Jolie donned YSL on the red carpet; and Kate Moss opted for a wet-look version.
Just last weekend, Rita Ora wore a tailored white suit while attending a birthday party in London. And on Monday, Rihanna hit the red-carpet at the British Fashion Awards wearing a velvet black tuxedo jacket by Stella McCartney.
Givenchy, Gucci and Christian Dior all sent models cascading down the 2014 catwalks in sensual suits. Armani has waiting lists for two of its offerings, while there are still 10 different varieties of YSL Le Smoking tuxedo jackets on offer today - close to half a century after Monsieur Saint Laurent introduced the iconic range.
Here, we take a look at some of the on-trend celebrities for whom the stylish trouser suit has proved irresistible...
Little Mix's Jade Thirwall (21)
The stylish singer (pictured with Aaron Carlo) was attending a launch in London's chic Mayfair, where guests also included Kate Moss and Alexa Chung.
Style: This bright pink trouser suit stood out for all the right reasons in a sea of A-listers. A Lulu Guinness clutch complimented the look perfectly.
Best for: Those who are confident in trouser suits. This isn't beginner's attire, but it will certainly attract attention.
Rozanna Purcell (24)
Earlier this year, and with the help of Morley's formal-wear shop in Cork, the Tipperary model launched her own collection of sharp trouser suits.
Style: She debuted an azure-coloured suit from her line at April's VIP Style Awards in Dublin - where she incidentally was named best dressed on the night.
Best for: Roz's long, toned limbs are perfectly suited to this style - indeed, fellow model Sarah Morrissey later impressed wearing the same piece. For those who don't quite reach those models' 5ft 11in height, a pair of stilettos is essential.
Angelina Jolie (39)
The Academy Award winner wore a custom Yves Saint Laurent tuxedo to the BAFTAs in February.
Style: She left her white shirt unbuttoned and her bow tie loose around her neck so as not to look overly rigid. And Angie is certainly no stranger to the trouser suit: as far back as 2001, she arrived at the Oscars in a white blazer and pants.
Best for: Those who like their trends with a twist.
Amal Alamuddin (36)
Amal married actor George Clooney in September in Venice. She wore Stella McCartney while registering their marriage.
Style: A cream suit and matching wide-brimmed hat. Her legs looked incredibly long, her hair gorgeously luscious - and her husband suitably beaming.
Best for: Those who are on top of the world.
Kate Moss (40)
A dedicated fan of the trend, in April the supermodel wore a wet-look pinstriped trouser suit for the launch of her Topshop line.
Style: Part of her - now sold-out - collection, she teamed the suit with classic Louboutin stilettos and a loose-fitting black top.
Best for: Those who don't like to try too hard.
Solange Knowles (28)
Beyonce's little sister wore trousers when she married Alan Ferguson last month in New Orleans.
Style: Ms Knowles arrived at the city's Holy Trinity Church in the Stephane Rolland cream jumpsuit and matching cape.
Best for: The dress-adverse quirky bride who doesn't do gowns. Think Bianca Jagger's masculine YSL creation which she wore to marry Mick in 1971.
Laura Whitmore (29)
She looked smart attending the Music Industry Trust Awards in London a month ago.
Style: Bray-native Laura is most definitely on a style roll. Her cropped black trousers keep the look interesting, while the scrunched sleeves and the over-sized grey clutch give a youthful feel.
Best for: Style-conscious folk who always want to look their best. This trouser suit would be perfect for an afternoon event, or a boardroom presentation.
