Dotty for spots and stripes
Bairbre Power on this season’s pattern clash
Ying and yang, spots and stripes. Combine the two and you won't look like a fashion victim mixing and matching your prints this season. This is the year when rules don't apply for rockin' your prints and contrasting colours.
Just as we juxtapose bright shades in colour blocking, you can happily mix polka dots with stripes. Red Herring, exclusive to Debenhams, has worked the combo with great success in our main picture. This concept breathes new life into the springtime favourite of navy and whites and it falls under the Coco Chanel nautical spell.
Stripes are the easy part; the resistance to dots is widespread. If you are nervous, Jasper Conran brings his designer nous to the high street with an extremely well-priced summer dress, where the dotty trend goes square. If you're not keen on a dress, team an embellished tunic, such as the one from Kaliko, with plain white jeans or trousers.
If you are a polka-dot virgin, start with a scarf. Veterans who fancy an itsy bitsy, teeny weeny, yellow polka-dot bikini should look no further than Dunnes, where prices are pleasing low: €8 for a top, €5 for bottoms.
