Demand for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee handbags creates 58 per cent sales increase
It's not only the Duchess of Cambridge who possess the power to cause a shopping stampede whenever she's photographed out of the house; her grandmother-in-law, Her Majesty the Queen, can hold her own when it comes inspiring copycat purchases, too.
Following the long weekend of public Diamond Jubilee celebrations earlier this month, the Queen's go-to handbag label, Launer London, has reported a 58 per cent increase in demand for bespoke creations.
Her Majesty was seen toting three custom-made styles in black during the festivities, which resulted in admirers of her style bombard the brand's website with requests for similar, boxy-shaped bags - causing the Launer.com site to crash.
"The royal family still means huge business for the UK, and there is still a big international appetite for any and all things associated with royalty" commented Gerald Bodmer, managing director and creative director of Launer.
Demand for pastel-hued bags in pink and green, as well as metallic shades, proved to be top of customers' shopping lists.
"What we have seen here is more requests in trend-led designs, with customers seeking to put their own stamp on our signature bags" explained Bodmer. "Who knows; this time next year the Queen may have forged her traditional black and be sporting one of our lovely bags in colour pop".
Last year, following the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Launer experienced a 60 per cent increase in sales of more traditional styles after the Queen was photographed toting a handmade leather handbag in cream.
The company, which was established in London in 1941, is sold in Selfridges, John Lewis, Fortnum & Mason, was granted a Royal Warrant by the Queen in 1968. Price start at £410 for an off-the-peg clutch bag, rising to £1057 for the roomier 'Royale' handbag.
