Darren Kennedy: Why suede is the alternative texture to try this season

The top tactile texture

Do you ever find that getting out of bed on a cold morning is easier when you've invested in a sumptuously warm winter cover-up?

After the influx of fur, wool and trench coats in recent years, I'm loving the addition of a different texture: suede. Retro suede jackets in hues of rust, camel, fawn and chocolate brown were seen on the catwalk at Coach 1941, Etro and Dior, resulting in a look that's polished but with a bohemian globetrotter edge. This season, suede jackets are a welcome alternative to the leather bikers that have reigned supreme over the last decade. Like leather, suede is versatile enough to wear with everything from denim to daytime frocks - just like the models who walked down the flower-laden runway at Tory Burch. Meanwhile, shearling-lined coats - as presented at Isabel Marant and Tod's - are the perfect way to dip your toes into the 1970s throwback trend. Pair yours with slouchy over-the-knee boots, oversized aviator sunglasses and a faux fur scarf or collar to dial up the vintage glamour.

Timothée Chalamet

Thanks to Timothée Chalamet, red-carpet menswear has an air of excitement again. The actor showed that he is a true style innovator when he donned a brushstroke suit by Alexander McQueen for the Critics’ Choice Awards. Lending a youthful, sportswear edge to the look, Chalamet opted for box-fresh chunky white trainers, instead of traditional dress shoes, and a simple black T-shirt.

One for the boys

As January is in full swing, it's likely that your "new year, new me" fitness goals are too. It can be tough mentally to get yourself going again after lounging cosily by the fire over Christmas - not to mention physically. If your muscles and joints are feeling the sudden change in activity, consider The Lost Explorer's all-natural restorative movement massage balm which helps relieve stiffness and inflammation after over-exertion. Keep it in your gym bag and view it as a post-workout reward to get through that last push. €51, thelostexplorer.com

Top Tip

Make like the Bohemian models at Coach 1941 and pair your longline suede jacket with a flowing floral maxi dress and Western boots.
