Darren Kennedy: Strike the right cord
It's the new denim
Classic 1970s fabric makes a comeback this season.
Skinny, straight leg, boyfriend cut, cropped, frayed, flared... denim has run the full gamut of styles over the past few years, and finally the skinny silhouette seems to be loosening its stranglehold as fashion's go-to style. If you're wondering what exactly the next big denim trend is - it is, in fact, not denim, but corduroy.
The 1970s stalwart is enjoying a renaissance, appearing across both men's and women's catwalks for autumn/winter. Gucci, Prada and Mulberry led the charge for a cord revival. No longer reserved for country gents or aging uncles, big, chunky cords are back in all their glory.
Biscuit shades that are straight from That '70s Show are there for sure, but this season you'll also find cords in the full spectrum of colours: bold bright blues, canary yellows and pillarbox red. It's not just trousers either; think field jackets, pinafore dresses, button-down skirts and corduroy suits.
The new corduroy trend is a far cry from the geography teacher of your youth. Embrace this season’s cord revival in feminine silhouettes, lightweight colours and all the comfort the fabric offers.
