Darren Kennedy: Sheer delights
How to follow fashion's revealing trend - and stay classy.
Time to be transparent
When it comes to flashing the flesh, a lady knows that it's always more elegant to leave a little to the imagination. For AW/17, transparent fabrics are one of the biggest trends. Designers in all the major fashion capitals presented a myriad of ways to incorporate see-through garments into outfits. In New York, Raf Simons' debut collection at Calvin Klein served up his take on the all-American brand with a subversive sexiness. Transparent tops featuring varsity sweater sleeves for both men and women were a big hit. There was also a plastic story, with transparent covers overlaying everything from tailoring to feathered cocktail dresses. In Paris, Miu Miu presented see-through plastic raincoats. The good news is that this trend is more wearable than you might think. Strategically placed transparent panels on garments create an overall feeling of lightness and femininity that's perfect for layering.
One for the boys
Of all the steps a man can take to protect his skin, moisturising is definitely the simplest and most effective. Dry skin tends to be more susceptible to premature ageing, so keeping it hydrated also acts as an insurance policy against future fine lines and wrinkles. Lab Series Matte Renewal Lotion from its ‘Max LS’ line is one to try, and ideal for naturally oily skin. This lightweight, easily absorbed product minimises shine and is formulated to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and ageing. It’s also got ‘illumatte’ technology, which helps to mattify and brighten skin. Ideal for the morning after the night before. €57.56, mrporter.com
You can give a nod to the transparent trend while still remaining relatively covered up by choosing dresses, tops, skirts and, indeed, outerwear with a peek-a-boo effect. If you’re a little wary to begin with, take it slowly with a sweater with see-through inserts around the neckline, or even a dress with a sheer overlay.
