Conquer new style territory in AW17's forward-looking capes.

Go with the flow

Practical and utterly chic, with a healthy dose of drama, there's plenty to love about the cape - and for AW17, it has been elevated to a new level. At Burberry, where capes are part of their history for over a century and a half, they were given the ultimate luxury treatment: covered in decadent lace, pearls, plastic, crystals, feathers and ruffles. Over at Balmain, Olivier Rousteing had a little fun with fringing, while elsewhere bold bursts of colour and print in cape form brightened up the catwalks. For decades, style icons such as Bianca Jagger, Diana Ross, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn have all known the value of a stylishly draped cape. Come a harsh winter's morning, there's nothing more gratifying than throwing on an oversized cape coat before facing out into the bitter cold.

Top tip

Counterbalancing the volume of a cape is key, so pair one with a fitted pencil skirt or skinny jeans. If you’re petite, opt for a capelet that hits above the hip to avoid swamping a small frame. If you think it’s adding too much volume, simply belt it to create a streamlined silhouette.
