Darren Kennedy: Bag of tricks
Don't just carry your bag - wear it!
Virgil Abloh, the designer behind cult fashion label Off-White, showed his first collection for Louis Vuitton this season in front of a 2,000-strong crowd of invited guests in the garden of Paris' Palais-Royal.
Abloh is the first African American to helm an LVMH house and it looks set to be a new era for the Parisian fashion house in more ways than one. The clothes presented a new direction for the brand, which had been under the stewardship of British designer Kim Jones (now heading up Dior) until a few months ago. To say that Abloh's collection is conceptual would be an understatement. Among the multiple tonal looks in red, white and black, perhaps most notable was the new form of "mid-garment", which furnished the backs of many of the models. Taking accessories to the next level, Abloh elevates the brand's iconic luggage to a new class of garment. "It's called a mid-layer garment. It's like, internally we call it 'acessamorphosis'. It came from the styling team, it's in our manifesto, it's the point at which an accessory becomes a garment," Abloh explained. Effectively, luggage that you wear. Think a blend of cross-body bags and shoulder holsters. Something the fashion forward will be getting their hands on ASAP!
