Darren Kennedy: A menswear guide to nailing dressing for silly season
Velvet is crushing big time for the party season
Party season is meant to be a time to relax and enjoy social occasions, but the cheer of the festivities can be dampened by feeling under/over-dressed, or like you never have the right thing to wear. The key to stress-free party dressing is carefully curating in advance a sartorial edit that will work for a multitude of outings.
This year, fashion is crushing on velvet and the High Street has a myriad of styles on offer. From cropped jackets to double-breasted suiting, velvet is the partywear of choice for 2018.
The recently launched Olly Murs X River Island collection features an eye-catching copper velvet Harrington jacket while the shops are awash with velvet suiting with Zara and Marks & Spencer in particular having some choice blazers.
It's not just velvet - texture across teddy bear-style coats and faux fur will bring your look bang up to date. Balmain nailed it with a super tactile biker jacket with frayed edging. All of these pieces will work in seamlessly with your wardrobe essentials. Think fitted check trousers, a crisp white shirt and a pair of lace-up boots.
The star of Bohemian Rhapsody, Remi Malek stepped out in Gucci for the film’s New York premiere. Ditching the tie and wearing a black shirt puts an ‘out of office’ spin on the grey check suit.
Swedish company Foreo has designed the world's most sophisticated electric toothbrush - made entirely from silicone. The beautifully designed Issa toothbrush uses high-intensity sonic pulses, but it swaps out traditional nylon bristles for rubbery silicone nubs to gently, effectively scrape off plaque. The pulsing also stimulates blood flow to give you healthier gums. Incredibly lightweight and durable, it's a particularly smart investment for frequent travellers. Once charged, the integrated battery can last up to 365 uses - six months if you're brushing twice a day. RRP €149, foreo.com
Finding the sweet spot between business and pleasure for the man who wants to look smart but not stuffy can be as simple as trying something new. If you typically wear a single-breasted jacket, go double.
