SENSIBLE shoes with pointy toes and chunky, square heels may seem more granny territory than cutting-edge fashion terrain. But high street brand Coast unveiled its Jasmine shoe (far right, €70) in Dublin and triggered immediate enquiries at their spring/summer 2014 launch.

However, it's not likely that everyone feels love for the retro-inspired court shoe, which flies close to earth, unlike the double platform shoes of recent years.

Judging by the reaction from style scribes and models yesterday, it is the younger, more trend-driven shopper who wants to step out in the granny style.

The shoes come in a metallic platinum, leopard skin and a high vis cerise suede.

Teenage model Clara McSweeney, newly returned from the catwalks of London Fashion Week, is typical of the young fashionista going for bright colours for spring, seen here in the Jasmine shoes and yellow Kenzie dress (€195) with a mermaid-like skirt made from large, shimmering, disc sequins.

Yellow is a colour to watch this season and if you don't fancy mustard or primrose, you could go for bolder, interesting hues like chartreuse.

With its greenish tones, it is a nice bridge colour into spring as it goes with all those winter favourites like navy, brown and black.

However, shy, more retiring types might prefer their yellows less in-your-face with subtle florals on a black background such as Coast's Atlanta dress.

Clara (16), who is in fifth year in school in Macroom, Co Cork, explained how she had to miss one day of her London Fashion Week adventure after falling sick.

But after the experience of walking for Bora Aksu and PPQ, she was in fine form for the Coast show yesterday – stepping out into the welcome sunshine with fellow model Karen Fitzpatrick, dressed here in the 'Boesy' strapless dress (€148) in a coral and aqua print.
