Designers love to reinvent the classics, and lace has been selected for a makeover time and time again. This season, Marni layered black lace tunics over candy-striped suits and topped off with leather bathing caps, Just Cavalli sent ivory lace, tiered ruffle trousers down the catwalk while Dior coupled pretty Chantilly lace slip dresses with blunt fringes and chunky ankle boots.
As for Christopher Kane, he took the traditional fabric to a whole other level. His palette of neon brights was a full-on starting point. But it was the vinyl-coated leather, perforated with a lace pattern, that gave a real contemporary edge. The futuristic look was contrasted with prim, knee-length, pleat skirts and argyle twin-sets.
