How to shimmer in the sea and sunshine

Sun, sand and sea. They may be the three most evocative words in the English language. As the schools go back and the rest of the world gets set for the daily grind of term time, how nice would it be to escape for a little R&R?

The last time I was on a sun holiday, I was relaxing on my lounger, gazing at the Med before me and imagining that I was paying homage to Brigitte Bardot in her south of France heyday. The reality was not quite so pretty.

Instead of sexy sun goddess (a girl can dream, y'know!), Sweaty Betty looked back at me from the mirror. I stared at my straggly updo with loose tendrils stuck to the back of my neck, pasty skin turning blotchy and mascara running down my cheeks and vowed that things would be different next year.

This time, I'm aiming for maximum impact. The first lesson to learn is the difference between water-resistant (good for a long hot day of sightseeing) and water-proof (you'll emerge from the pool with mascara still on your lashes). Most cosmetics contain silicon oil which helps to make the product feel smooth when you apply it. The waterproof versions contain a different type of the same oil, which fights against the effects of water.

With a little advance planning, you can work that sexy, dewy 'no make-up make-up' that stays put in the sun. Here are a few tools to help you keep your cool.

Dermalogica Solar Booster SPF 50, €43.50

Make sure you're protected by mixing a little of this with your usual foundation.

Clinique Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturiser SFP 15, €28

Waterbabies will love this light base, which is water, streak and sweat-proof.

Clarins Fix' Make-Up, €23

Spritz on to stop non-waterproof make-up from sliding off as you sip that cocktail.

Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara, €30

Foolproof, glossy and gives great definition. Available in black, brown, bronze and green. Remove by soaking cotton wool in an oil-based remover, place it on eyes for a few moments to dissolve the mascara and wipe off in one gentle movement.

MAC Liquidlast Eyeliner, €21

This precision line will last through the day (and night), no matter how many times you take a dip.

Benefit BADgal Liner Waterproof Eye Pencil, €21

If you want to work a smoky eye on a sultry night, make sure to pack one of these, which will stay put, come (monsoon) rain or (lots of) shine. Available in espresso, charcoal and black.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Eyeshadow, €24

Formulated specially for oily skin, these summer shades won't budge when confronted by H20, but will compliment your tan.

Becca Beach Tint, €25, available from www.misebeauty.com

This antioxidant-pack and paraben-free stain works on cheeks and lips. It's water and kiss-proof, and comes in six yummy shades, including my fave, strawberry. Suitable for all skin types.
