A walk on the wild side
Men can stay on trend by showing off their animal magnetism in this season's most daring prints, writes Deirdre Reynolds
They say a leopard never changes its spots, but zookeeper Alan Duffy was only too happy to change out of his work gear to show off some of the most feral looks for fellas this fall.
Animal print, faux fur and leather are all wildly popular among the female of the species at the moment.
But now guys can display their animal magnetism in the trends, too.
"As a member of Dublin Zoo's animal care team, I mostly work with the giraffes, zebras and chimpanzees at our African Plains," says Alan (32) from Blanchardstown.
"I wear a uniform every day, so I don't really keep up with fashion trends.
"But I was surprised at how good the animal-inspired prints looked. The zoo residents could have some competition!"
Here are our top rules for looking grrr-eat this autumn:
1Like pink, animal print isn't just for girls. If you are planning to steal Tony the Tiger's style this season, though, it's best to stick to one statement print, such as this Sibling Leopard Print Jumper (€277.64 from Hervia.com), and team it with a neutral colour like black.
Incidentally, don't be afraid to browse the women's section for oversized knits. But avoid raiding your girlfriend's wardrobe unless you want to end up in the dog house!
2 For a tamer take on the trend, add some animal magic to your outfit with accessories. From fierce footwear, like these Derby Shoes With Leopard Print (€56.61 from ASOS.com), to more low-key leather man bags, such as this Weekend Holdall Bag (€95 from Men's at Dune), there are any number of ways to cheetah the trend this autumn.
Two add-ons – boots and gloves, for instance – should do the trick.
3 Animal motifs are massive this season. Big cats, game birds and even dinosaurs are just some of the beasts that can be found on everything from T-shirts to ties. But if you only buy one animal print item this winter, make it a wolf.
Do your best Liam Neeson in The Grey impression with this unisex Wolf T-Shirt (€29 from Tshirtstore online.com). Shaggy beard optional.
4 Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana all showcased real fur as part of their AW13/14 collections. But women aren't the only ones who'll be faking it this winter. Faux fur is the cheapest – and kindest – way to stay warm and on trend.
Unleash the beast in 'fur'-lined coats, such as this Black Faux Fur Collared Smart Coat (€190 from Topman), boots, gloves and trapper hats. Meanwhile, animal lovers can have it both ways in 'pleather' (plastic leather), too.
5 Even Wolverine has to dress for his body shape. Remember that big prints make you look bigger, so they're good for optically bulking up your physique. Small prints make you look smaller, so are ideal for disguising relaxed muscles!
If you're more Michael D Higgins than Michael Fassbender, avoid horizontal patterns such as zebra print, which will only make you look dumpier.
