A parent-friendly yet stylish outfit for my grad

Darren Kennedy

a parent-friendly yet stylish outfit for my grad My school grad is coming up soon and I would like a nice dress, or even a skirt look, that's affordable, something that my parents would approve of and still stylish.

Despite the latest trends and fashion fads, there is an inherent sophistication to monochrome that explains its enduring appeal.

For a look that's young, current and bang on-trend, try New Look's monochrome geometric mini (1 €24.99). Bearing in mind the fashion formula of cleavage versus leg exposure, style it with the white embossed jumper (2 €18.99, also New Look) for proportionate coverage. Accessorise with a statement gold cuff and complete the look with Dunnes Stores' panel ankle boot (3 €30).

If you'd prefer more leg coverage then try a tartan pleated midi skirt (4 €30, Boohoo.com) paired with a simple white blouse and a pair of black courts.

Heatons' birdcage-print dress is gentle and feminine with a very pocket-friendly price tag of €15 (5).

Another option is to channel the sport-luxe trend that has filtered down to the high street over the past couple of seasons. For autumn it takes a feminine turn with a mix of modern shapes and ladylike colours.

For instance, River Island's colour- block scuba dress in blue, coral and white is a directional piece for a fierce look (6 €67 ).
