Easy Pieces - five beauty products that give maximum effect
Effortlessly gorgeous is a doddle to achieve sometimes, says our beauty expert, and these five treats are easy-peasy
We're all mad about a make-up product that gives maximum effect with minimal effort. They're the products that allow you to seem like a cosmetic whizz, when, in fact, you still aren't quite sure what to do with all those brushes you've bought, and the thought of combining more than two eyeshadows makes you want to cry. And yet, you still like make-up. And you like it even more when it's the kind of make-up that gets you compliments. Not because you look made up, but because with the aforesaid minimal effort, you just look that little bit sharper, sleeker and even healthier. It doesn't take much, but you have to have the right stuff.
Our five favourites today are cosmetic-bag additions that you'll use to death. Each and every one would also be a welcome addition to your haul for holidays, which is the ultimate occasion for making minimal effort for maximum effect. And even if you don't have a holiday planned, these products speak subtly about summer and a bit of sun. They are, as a five-some, sheer but glossy, with the kind of glimmer and glow that we seek at this time of year. They are, too, in case you didn't get the message, a doddle to do right.
Giorgio Armani Maestro Glow
SPF 30, €46, Giorgio Armani counters nationwide
If you have oily skin, this is not for you. However, if you don't, this is just gorgeous. It is glowy, as the name suggests, but that can be lovely in summer, particularly when it's infused into a sheer product like this. There is no water at all in the mix, it's just oil and pigment, so there is no actual layer of foundation on your skin. It basically seems to sink in and leave a veil of perfecting tint. "This is the lightest of lightweight," said one panellist. "And yet it lifted my complexion and made it look more even and healthy."
Best Quick Quad
Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Empreinte du Desert, €53, Chanel counters nationwide
The three sand-to-bronze colours in this quad speak loudly of the desert it's named for, and then you have the hit of green, and that's what lifts this compact above others. You can do simple, classy metallic-tan effects, or you can add the green for total glamour. All four are fabulously shimmering, and can be worn as a sheer wash or ramped up for more impact. "There is no denying that these shadows look amazing with a tan, if you're allowed to say that anymore," a panellist said.
Best Lovely Lids
YSL Full Metal Shadow in Bonnie Copper, €29, YSL counters nationwide
You can't say fairer or more foolproof than an eyeshadow that you swipe on with a single swish for a sophisticated effect. You cannot go wrong with this stuff, which comes in 10 other shades, too. It goes on with a cool feel and dries quickly, however, so make sure to only put it where you want it. This bronze-to-copper colour is a great summer look. "Perfect for holidays," said a panellist. "It hardly takes up any space, and you get a glam look in about 30 seconds."
Best Scarlet Summer
Clarins Instant Light Lip Balm Perfector in Red Shimmer, €20, Clarins counters nationwide
We love pretty much all of the colours in this line of lip balms that are packed with pigment, but the red is particularly good. If you tend to ease off on the smoky eyes in summer, unfussy red lips can keep the glamour levels up, and this is just the product for that. Because it's light and sheer, you don't need to bother with lip pencil or a lip brush, just slick it on and you're done. "I get terrible chapped lips in summer, so a hybrid balm and lipstick is a blessing," one panellist said. "And this has colour that lasts, which is unusual."
Best Pretty Palette
Rimmel by Kate Sculpting Palette in Golden Bronze, €8.99, available nationwide
There are two shades in this neat contouring kit from the Kate Moss line for Rimmel, but we went for the darker one as a nod to summer skintone. Even if you wear your sunscreen daily, a lot of us will go sightly darker in summer. The bronze, blush and highlight powders can be worn separately - or together, for the contouring effect - and there's an instructive sketch of Kate's face on the back of the palette. "A good, velvety powder with no ashy tone or dusty texture," said a panellist. "A great price for a summer staple."
