Darren Kennedy: Plastic fantastic! From PVC to vinyl, take a shine to chic synthetics
Runways from Paris to Shanghai featured plenty of PVC this season, as designers tinkered with the fabric, but credit must be given to Raf Simons and his first collection for Calvin Klein, which featured an abundance of looks topped off with a layer of transparent plastic.
At Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld presented models wearing knee-high plastic boots and transparent gloves. Transparency has crossed over into menswear, with sheer fabrics gaining prominence on men's catwalks. British label A-Cold-Wall provoked gasps with their see-through ensembles, cast in their signature, immersive brand of art-meets-streetwear. Granted, these may not seem like the most wearable or even breathable garments, but there is an undeniable element of fun for those brave enough to embrace their more eccentric side. And I suspect we will see a lot of clear PVC rain jackets on the high street in seasons to come!
