Your diarist bumped into Deirdre O'Kane on Grafton Street last week. Was she tangoing? No, merely walking, sadly. The actress, comedian, and one-time star of Dancing With The Stars - hence the bad tango joke - was coming out of Martin McDonagh's The Cripple of Inishmaan at the Gaiety Theatre, with her kids Holly and Daniel. She told me she was gearing up for Paddy's Night in Support of Comic Relief at the 3 Arena on March 17 which Deirdre has organised now for the third year.

"We have raised over €400,000 for charities tackling homelessness and the refugee crisis. I am travelling to Gaza with Trocaire in April to see how some of the money was spent," Deirdre said. "This year's show has everyone from Tommy Tiernan to Pat Shortt, Jason Byrne, Neil Delamere, Mario Rosenstock, Kevin McAleer, Eleanor Tiernan, Waterford Whispers News and many more.

"Where would you get 18 of the best comedians in Ireland" - nay the world! - "performing eight minutes each at the 3 Arena for €39? Tommy Tiernan has been so supportive. We couldn't have done it without him," said Deirdre, adding that next year she hopes to have a TV station involved in the show to make it a telethon.

In the meantime, between Comic Relief on St Patrick's Night and a telly telethon next year, the breathless Drogheda deity of comedy will be playing her own show ('A line of O'Kane' - geddit?) at Vicar Street in Dublin on April 4.

Fellow Dancing With The Stars star and Miss Ireland 2011 Holly Carpenter - and her lovely mum Jane - were spotted at the swish Johnstown Estate hotel in Enfield last Wednesday week. The two beauties were seen enjoying the spa and later dining in the establishment's fine restaurant Fire & Salt. My Deep Throat in Meath also told me that they stayed in the super-chic Lady Margaret Suite. Sweet.

Engaging times for King of Kop Ian and our Carol

Cork beauty Carol Anthony and Liverpool football legend Ian Rush have got engaged

The King of the Kop - thus named because he scored a club record of 346 goals in 660 appearances for Liverpool - made it official with his Queen two weeks ago. Ian Rush and Carol Anthony, for it is they, are engaged. The Cork beauty and the handsome football icon have been together since late 2013.       "We've been speaking about it for a long time," beautiful brunette Cazza told me. "We don't feel any different as we always knew we would be together for the long haul."

The ex-pop star (she sang under the name Havana and was once managed by former Wham! svengali Simon Napier-Bell) turned business woman is no stranger to long haul as she and Ian are forever stepping on and off planes in distant lands.

"When we travel together, Ian always introduces me as his wife. Two weeks ago, I corrected him and said, 'Ian, I'm not your wife.' He said: 'Yes, but I want you to be. That is, if you want to be?'"

I ask Carol what she said to that?

"I said, 'There's nothing in this world that would make me happier!'"

Carol, who lives with Ian in homes in Chester and London (and Spain and Dubai), added that "someone in our local pub who sees us regularly said to me recently: 'You and Ian are best friends.' He was spot on. We enjoy our own company so much and that is 100pc necessary for a perfect companion."

"Ian speaks to my brother Shane about me all the time and his wife Kerry relays it to me, saying: 'Ian just adores you.' Ian is a big softie deep down. He is an incredible man, such integrity, so grounded," Carol said of the man who shared a box bedroom with his five older brothers - Francis, Gerald, Graham, Peter and Stephen - in a council house in Flint, North Wales as a kid and his father Francis (who passed away in 2003, aged 78) worked in Shotton Steelworks.

"Ian told my brother: 'I never knew true happiness until I met Carol.'"

You could say the same for our Carol, who has clearly had her heart stolen away from her for good by the charismatic Welsh wizard. She'll never walk alone up the aisle, with Leo her dad doubtless giving her away.

Eoghan marks girlfriend Aoife's birthday in 37

RTE star Eoghan McDermott was at a party on Dawson Street last weekend. Not just any party, mind. It was a small birthday party to celebrate his gorgeous girlfriend Aoife Melia's big day. Or big night as it were  - in 37. That's the name of the bar, not her age. You never ask a lady her age. They arrived after a dinner around the corner in Dylan McGrath's Fade Street Social restaurant. Eoghan and Aoife faded into the background with a few pals in a snazzy snug in 37.

On the following night in the aforementioned hipster emporium on Dawson Street, Valerie Roe held a reunion bash for 40 of the staff of Lillie's, the nightclub on Grafton Street, now closed, that Ms Roe ran so gloriously in its heyday. They all dined in Wilde at the Westbury Hotel before landing in 37 until late.

A late night was also de rigeur last Friday night in London for the opening night of Heartbeat of Home at the Palladium. Post-standing ovations, Kathleen Watkins told your diarist at the party that she is already writing the next instalment - the third - of her literary opus Pigin. Gaybo's other half was joined at the soiree in Argyll Street by Bernie Doyle (daughter of the ground-breaking hotelier PV), Eimear Mulhern (daughter of the late Charlie Haughey), forensic cyberpsychologist Mary Aiken, publicist James Morrissey, international promoter Maurice Cassidy, and Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood's ex wife Jo. The bash was hosted by Heartbeat of Home's creators John McColgan and wife Moya Doherty. John's son Justin flew in from LA for the opening night with his wife.

Paula fits perfectly in NYC, courtesy of Kendall

As Old Blue Eyes sang, 'If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere'. Well, Dubliner and glove-maker-to-the-stars Paula Rowan is getting an opportunity to do just that.

Her leather gloves - made even more famous because Kendall Jenner, looking like she was doing a spot of cleaning, wore a pair of them in the nip, apart from some heels, in Italian Vogue last month - are now being stocked in the ultra-fashion-forward 10 Corso Como in New York. Paula, who has her own store in the Westbury Mall, is jetting over to New York next month. It could become this season's new trend: doing the cleaning in the buff.

Please note: Independent News & Media accepts no responsibility for privates harmed with household cleaning products, gloves or no gloves, experimenting a la Kendall Jenner.
