'You can't help who you fall in love with' - Jake Carter on finding romance with Karen Byrne
Age is only a number when it comes to romance in Jake Carter’s eyes.
The singer (20) is in a relationship with professional dancer Karen Byrne (26) after their chemistry on the dancefloor transferred over to real life and the Liverpudlian asked Ballyfermot woman Karen out. Although she’s six years his senior, Jake doesn’t think much of the age gap between them. He told the Diary that being a part of the showbiz industry made him mature quicker than his peers, so dating someone a bit older wasn’t a big deal for him.
“I grew up younger than other people my age, I think,” said Jake, who’s based in Fermanagh. “When you’re younger, an age gap is kind of made out to be a bigger deal, but as I get a bit older you realise love isn’t about age and you can’t help who you fall in love with. The age thing doesn’t bother either of us.”
News of the pair’s romance emerged last August. Jake previously admitted he had been “bricking it” when he made the first move and asked out Karen, who had become a good pal of his as they rehearsed for Dancing With The Stars.
Last night marked a year since they lifted the Glitterball trophy, and those 12 months have kept the singer busy with touring and recording music.
Jake wouldn’t have it any other way, saying he feels he’s exactly where he’s meant to be.
“It is a bit crazy, life is like that. I’m happy where I am now,” he said.
As big brother Nathan is a country star, Jake said people expect him to follow in his footsteps when it comes to his music style. He said his music is more pop than the twangy western style his brother is famed for.
“It’s a struggle sometimes, people presume I’m country, but I’m more pop,” he said.
He said his new single, Supernatural, had an Olly Murs vibe going on.
“With the name Carter, people link me to country, they don’t give it a chance. It’s hard to get music on radio then,” he said.
However, there’s one thing about his brother’s career he would like to replicate in his own: having his own TV show.
Jake said there had been interest from production companies keen on making a show with him for RTE or Virgin Media.
“Hopefully, in the next few months, you might see my own show on TV – I love presenting, it’s something I really like,” he said.
Music is definitely still his bread and butter, though, as he gears up for his nationwide tour next month.
“I love touring, it’s what my job is,” he said.
Before all that, Jake is planning on flying off to Tenerife with Karen for some sun and a bit of down time.
