Ashton Kutcher says that his mom Diane has been one of the greatest influences in his life, and anything he can do to say thank you is the right thing to do.
“Everyone has a place in their life that they call home, that sort of has that feeling of home, and no matter where you are in the world...when you think of home, you’re drawn to a specific place in your mind. The renovation that we're going to do is the place I call home," the A list actor said.
To re design his beloved mother’s basement into an area the whole extended family can enjoy, the star used design technology pioneered by Houzz.
Ashton originally helped build the family home in Iowa with his stepdad Mark, but the basement always remained an unfinished “rec area”.
Just in time for Mother’s Day, the dad-of-one used innovative technology to collaborate on a redesign project with Mark from his own home in Los Angeles.
To keep Diane out of the loop, the former That 70s Show actor asked her to come stay with him, Mila and their newborn Wyatt while the builders got to work.
The plan included knocking down walls, heightening ceilings and opening up the area to include more natural light.
The main living area now has a more family-friendly layout space where the Kutchers can “all sit together and celebrate”.
Diane’s treasured antiques and photos are also proudly displayed and there’s a special room devoted to storing her famous homemade salsas and vegetable sauces.
“Mom you don’t have to cry in every room,” mocked Ashton as Diane became consumed with emotion at the heartfelt gesture.
“It does mean a lot to me...it’s just beautiful,” a tearful Diane choked.
“It’s our way of saying - thank you for giving us everything,” Ashton retaliated.
