Actress Victoria Smurfit has spoken about her marital split as she finalised her divorce from Doug Baxter.

The Dublin-born star, who now lives in LA, spoke about parting from her South African partner of 15 years in 2015. But far from wallowing in sadness, she took the opportunity to remark on the ironies of life.

“The day my divorce was finalised, I was filming The Lears movie in a wedding dress,” she said. "Proof that life has a bloody good sense of humour. It’s a great reminder to always find the ludicrous in all that life decides to throw at you.”

She accompanied her Instagram message with a picture of her dressed as a bride. The movie tells the story of what happens when a dad-of-four decides to marry his PA.

Victoria and Doug filed for divorce in a Californian court two years ago, but said they are “the best of friends” and intend to keep things that way for the sake of their “tight-knit family”. The mum-of-thee has since found happiness again with handsome film-maker boyfriend Alistair Ramsden.

Speaking about life after divorce, she said: “It’s nice to know there’s life in the old dog yet. It’s a brave new world and modern families are being accepted so much more and I’m really happy.”

Victoria said that when it comes to thinking back on her years with Doug, she tries to focus on the positives.

“I think that hideous old adage about trusting yourself is something I’ve only learned recently,” she said.

It’s so hard to talk about this without sounding negative or like a victim, because I’m not interested in any of that rubbish.

“I think no matter what, life comes with knocks, that’s how it comes. That’s how you learn.”
