Dating in your underwear could be preferable to finding love on Tinder, according to b ehavioural psychologist and relationship expert Jo Hemmings.

The psychologist, who has helped to develop new TLC show Undressed, said people are losing the ability to communicate face-to-face.

Undressed will see strangers removing everything but their underwear and getting in to bed together, where they will spend 30 minutes alone except for the cameras.

The show is based on the idea that vulnerability can help create closeness.

Hemmings said: " I do think that online dating is in danger of overtaking real time dating, and people are losing the skills to meet people and communicate.

"It would be a shame if the only way the next generation knows how to date, is through online dating sites and apps and by flirting from behind a screen."

During the date, participants will face a screen which will pose questions and set tasks to help them get to know each other.

On why the show will appeal, she explained: " It's a new type of dating show, and viewers won't have seen anything like it before.

"It strips away the psychological guards and defence mechanisms that people have, along with the physical barriers of clothing as a form of expressing their personality and identity, so it cuts right to the chase of chemistry and compatibility which is what people want to see in this complicated dating world."

The semi-naked singletons will have the chance to tackle "taboo" subjects and ask "sensitive and sometimes provocative questions", she said.

She added: "There is a lot less dating going on than people think and a lot of looking, swiping and messaging that often lead to nothing. There is also the perception that given the vast array of dating apps and website out there, it is easy to find a compatible date.

"But as profile information gets briefer - sometimes just a photo, location and age - we actually have less information to go on."

:: Undressed starts on July 15 at 10pm on TLC.
