Theresa May deftly battered away fears over the future of televised baking in Britain with the masterful diplomacy expected of a global leader.

The Prime Minister, who found watching The Great British Bake Off "great fun", said viewers will continue to enjoy the programme when it moves to Channel 4 - as well as a rival show rumoured to be planned by the BBC.

"If we have two Bake Offs in the future then people are going to enjoy them both," she told the Sunday Times.

Despite the hit programme finding a fan in the PM, the sight of a Victoria sponge or pecan pie will probably be rare in the No 10 kitchen during Mrs May's premiership due to her suffering from type 1 diabetes.

"It's always great fun watching Bake Off," she said.

"Because I'm diabetic I tend not to bake these days. So I can watch and admire the amazing showpieces that they produce."

Her fellow fans reacted with anger and dismay when it was revealed the beloved BBC 1 programme had been sold to Channel 4.

Their unease was further compounded when it emerged presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins would not be following to its new home.

According to The Sun the PM is a big fan of treasured judge Mary Berry, who later confirmed that she will also remain with the BBC.

Saturday saw Mrs May celebrate her 60th birthday and become the oldest prime minister since Margaret Thatcher.

She told The Times that she hoped her husband, Philip, would take her out to dinner, although it was not reported if any cake would be on the menu.

Meanwhile, Channel 4 denied reports that Delia Smith could replace Berry on the show, and that comedy duo Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders could host the new series.

"We are taking our time to find the right presenters and judges for Bake Off. We have not approached anyone about the roles," a spokesman said.
