#TBT: David and Victoria Beckham’s most talked about moments of the noughties
The Beckhams are rarely out of the spotlight and with that in mind, we’re taking a look at their top ten most talked about moments.
1. The engagement
David Beckham and a then Victoria Adams got engaged in 1998 at Rookery Hall hotel in Cheshire after David proposed to the Spice Girl with a €88,000 engagement ring. After the couple informed their families of the news, they revealed their exciting news to the media by way of a press conference – naturally. The photographs from the day show a beaming Victoria as she proudly shows off her rock with David by her side.
2. The OTT wedding
The impossibly-ostentatious thrones, the sprawling castle, the Slim Barrett crown placed on top of a dodgy and spikey hair-do and the lavish Vera Wang gown – David and Victoria’s Dublin wedding in 1999 is now the stuff of celebrity legend. The wedding reportedly cost the couple €1,090,000 and while that may seem modest given today’s standards (they rake in approx €90,000 per day), this was 16 years ago.
3. Matching outfits
Posh ‘n’ Becks became synonymous with matching outfits when they made their first foray into style icon status wearing coordinated head-to-toe Versace leather at a party thrown by the designer in 1999. They’ve now admitted that they are suitably mortified when they look back on their identical outfits, the pair’s penchant for matching has been much-commented on down through the years, including their memorable appearance at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards in all-white D&G ensembles.
4. That Parkinson interview
Victoria left David red-faced in a 2001 interview with Michael Parkinson when she revealed that she calls him Goldenballs – a nickname which has persisted ever since. The whole interview was a cheese fest, with Victoria then serenading her husband with one of her songs called ‘I O U’.
5. David receives his OBE
They’ve long been considered celebrity royalty, but the Beckham rubbed shoulders with actual British royalty in 2003 when David Beckham received his OBE for services to sport. The entire affair was caught on camera as the Beckhams were in the midst of filming their 2004 documentary entitled ‘The Real Beckhams.’
6. The Beckhams move to Madrid
The Beckhams’ 2003 move to Madrid also featured heavily in their aforementioned documentary as David was transferred Real Madrid from Manchester United for a whopping €35m. The move was plagued with rumours that David was moved because his celebrity lifestyle proved too much for Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson as tensions between the footballer and his manager reached boiling point.
7. The Rebecca Loos scandal
Back in 2004, David's former assistant alleged she had an affair with the soccer superstar, claims which he immediately branded as "ludicrous". Victoria decided against speaking out, instead choosing to stand by her man and put on a united front and thanks to the Beckhams’ proficiency at PR and controlling fans’ perception, it has largely been erased from public memory.
8. The Full Length and Fabulous Party
Back in 2006, David and Victoria hosted a pre-World Cup party in their Hertfordshire mansion and with Victoria in charge of organising the event – another moment captured on film for an ITV special. The premise of the party was to host a charity auction and Victoria showed her keen eye for design as she oversaw every detail of the event along with party planner Peregrine Jones from the borders of the invites down to the patterns on the wine glasses. The party was a who’s who of celeb-land and Victoria was the star of the show in an eye-catching Cavalli gown.
9. The Beckhams come to America
When David Beckham signed with LA Galaxy in 2007, the move coincided with a stratospheric rise in the popularity of Brand Beckham. As Victoria posed on the pitch in that Roland Mouret Galaxy dress paired with a matching ostrich skin Birkin, the couple made sure everyone knew they had arrived. Once again, a camera crew followed their every move in ITV’s 2007 documentary – Victoria Beckham: Coming to America - where viewers were offered the chance to see Mrs Beckham soak up the LA lifestyle and join her on her quest to find the perfect mega mansion. Their official arrival to the States was marked with an extravagant Hollywood party, thrown by Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith.
10. The Beckhams attend the Royal Wedding
David and Victoria mixed with the crème de la crème of British society as they attended the 2011 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Victoria, who was pregnant with Harper at the time, wore one of her own designs – a stunning boat-neck navy dress (paired with wildly inappropriate towering Christian Louboutin heels) as well as a Philip Treacy headpiece and David was dapper in custom Ralph Lauren.
