Sue Perkins admits it was 'so frightening' to let go of Mel when she wed and had kids
Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins has revealed that she felt a loss when best friend and co-presenter Mel Gledroyc got married.
The two presenters have been inseparable both on and off-screen since they met in college at Cambridge in 1988.
Sue (46) described the pair's friendship as a "double helix" and admitted that it was "so frightening" to let go of Mel when she got married to director Ben Morris 13 years ago.
The presenter, who is in a long-term relationship with documentary-maker Anna Rider Richardson, found it strange to adjust to her life without her best friend constantly at her side.
"Through all of our 20s and a good chunk of our 30s we were inseparable," she said.
"You actually love each other and she met this amazing guy. There was this moment when you think 'Oh'.
"I felt a certain kind of loss when she got married and had a kid."
Earlier this year, Sue revealed that she's infertile due to a benign pituitary brain tumour and said being told she would not be able to have children was difficult.
"I don't know if I would have gone on to have children. But as soon as someone says you can't have something, you want it more than anything."
However, the popular TV host has said that there's "no jealousy" between her and mother-of-two Mel.
"It is not 'I want what you have', it is not 'I'm jealous', it is the letting go and the profound love as you do it," she told comedienne Dawn French while promoting her memoirs 'Spectacles' in London on Sunday.
"She had a child and it was at a time when I couldn't. And I watched her and now she is an amazing mother with amazing kids and it's so frightening really."
