Stylist Cathy O'Connor on splitting with her fiancé at 55: 'I didn't realise there is such a big association with age and not finding love'
Stylist Cathy O'Connor has revealed people would stop her on the street after she got engaged at the age of 53 in 2014.
Cathy (55), who is a regular on TV3's Ireland AM and Xpose, was engaged to Emmy award-winning American Marc Flanagan (64) for two years and together for seven years in total, but the pair split six months ago.
"When I got engaged, it was an incredible reaction in that I hadn't realised there is such a big association with age and not finding love," she told RSVP Magazine.
"I was amazed that people who didn't know me would come up to me, hold hand, look into my eyes and say, 'You have done it, you are brilliant to have found someone'.
"It was astonishing and sad to me to think hat it is game over when you reach an age. I was so taken aback by it that I needed time, it was overwhelming - totally overwhelming."

The popular tv personality said she never had the desire for children, but had begun the fostering process with her former fiancé at the time of their split.
"I have no doubt I will meet a fantastic man who already has a family," she said.
Cathy said it "was just the right thing to do" to call it a day, saying she never had a great desire to get married.
"I have to make the best choices for myself and I have been very lucky, my parents never put me under pressure to get married so it has been very much my life, on my own terms.
"I am very fortunate. I never sought marriage or really wanted it."
