DJ and television presenter Eoghan McDermott was the victim of a St Stephen's night attack which left him unconscious, according to a recent tweet from the star.

McDermott wrote: "Some coward jumped me from behind as I was walking down the road last night, got knocked unconscious. Brain scan, concussion. I'll find you!"

There has been an outpouring of sympathy from fans of the Dubliner, with one tweeting "horrible thing to happen. Hope you're on the mend and that they're found and dealt with," while another added "Oh my God! I'm so sorry to hear that! I hope you get well soon bud!"

The 2fm DJ (33) recently put his backing behind the new Pieta House campaign, which aimed to raise awareness of Pieta House's suicide helpline 1800 247 247, a number that will be available 24 hours each day over Christmas.

Mr McDermott has not disclosed where the incident happened. Independent.ie has contacted him for comment.
