Crime drama Scott & Bailey will end after the current fifth series, ITV has confirmed.

Stars Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp, who play detectives Rachel Bailey and Janet Scott respectively, had hinted about a Scott & Bailey conclusion in recent interviews.

A spokeswoman said: "ITV can confirm this is the final series and it's a mutually agreed decision by all parties."

She added: "Scott & Bailey isn't being decommissioned or axed."

Revolving around the lives of a pair of Manchester-based policewomen, Scott & Bailey premiered to acclaim in 2011.

The award-winning show returned for series five on April 13 with a solid overnight average of 4.8 million viewers and a 23% share of the total viewing audience.

Despite the increase on the 4.5 million who watched the fourth series launch in 2014, the curtain will come down with this final three-part format run.

In the remaining two episodes, Scott & Bailey continue to tackle one of the biggest and darkest cases they have ever faced.

The duo are on the trail of multiple killers, but the investigation will take a devastating toll on their professional and personal lives.

Jones, who conceived the idea for the show alongside fellow former Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay, is also acting as executive producer.

Lindsay, recently seen in BBC One's Happy Valley, has returned to the Red Production Company ITV hit as Bailey's sister Alison.

The Scott & Bailey characters were created by Happy Valley writer Sally Wainwright and retired detective Diane Taylor.

Taylor helped shape the series from her experiences of working within the Greater Manchester Police Force.

Jones will revive her portrayal of betrayed GP Gemma Foster in BBC One drama Doctor Foster later this year.

The second series begins f ilming in September with the Oldham-born star increasing her responsibilities to that of associate producer.
