Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar said she "heard incorrectly" when she tweeted her condolences to Boy George instead of George Michael.

The former Wham! singer passed away at his home in London on Christmas Day and tributes have been flooding in and unsurprisingly the #RIPGeorgeMichael hashtag has been trending on Twitter since the news broke.

But the Buffy star said she thought it was singer Boy George who died when she sent this:

She has since apologised for the confusion, saying her "intentions were good" and "it all seemed so sad on Christmas."

"Just as sad when you get the correct information- #ripGeorgeMichael thank you to everyone who corrected me- it's still so sad," she wrote.

"And for the record yes I completely know the difference between Boy George and George Michael - I heard incorrectly. My intentions were good.

"This is usually why I don't comment on public matters, but it all seemed so sad on Christmas. Lesson learned."
