Sarah credits co-star Julie Bowen with helping her break free from her ex-boyfriend, who verbally and physically terrorised her for four years.
Actress Sarah Hyland has been granted a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend Matthew Prokop, after he choked her and threatened her life.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the 23-year-old star has been issued a temporary restraining order after she was pushed, choked, and threatened by Prokop.
In one particular incident, Julie Bowen, who plays Hyland’s mother in the hit TV sitcom Modern Family, stepped in to protect the actress from Prokop.
According to the documents, Hyland asked Julie to come to her house and help her “peacefully end the relationship” with Prokop (24).
When Prokop arrived to her home, he saw Julie and “freaked out...he ran outside into the backyard and began screaming," before throwing a lighter at Hyland.
According to Hyland’s statements, that's when Julie stepped in and told Hyland to get out of the house because she wasn't safe around Prokop.
In the documents, Hyland claims that her ex-boyfriend ‘terrorised’ her verbally and physically over the course of their four year relationship.
In one instance, Prokop pinned Hyland against a car during an argument and called her ‘c***’ repeatedly while choking her.
"His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life," the petite actress stated, claiming she had injuries to her voice after the incident.
When Hyland tried to end their relationship, Prokop threatened to set her home on fire, kill her dog, and sent emotionally disturbing texts insinuating his own suicide threats.
Prokop entered rehabilitation for several weeks, and when he was released on September 21st, the director of the facility contacted her to recommend filing a restraining order against him.
The pair met at an audition for Disney’s High School Musical, and co-starred in the TV movie Geek Charming.
