Saoirse starts awards season with a win
Saoirse Ronan has kicked off awards season with a win, nabbing Best Actress for 'Lady Bird' at the Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York.
The 23-year-old Irish star dedicated her award to "the two women who mean so much to me," referencing her mother and 'Lady Bird' writer and director Greta Gerwig.
It brings Saoirse one step closer to an Oscar, having racked up two nominations already for 'Atonement' and 'Brooklyn'.
At the awards at New York City's Cipriani Wall Street, she was up against Melanie Lynskey for 'I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore', Haley Lu Richardson for 'Columbus', Margot Robbie for 'I, Tonya', and Lois Smith for 'Marjorie Prime'.
Other awards recipients on the night included Nicole Kidman, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Blum, Al Gore, Sofia Coppola and Ed Lachman.
'Call Me By Your Name' won Best Feature.
