Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint is to star in a television remake of Guy Ritchie's film Snatch.

Grint, who played Harry's sidekick Ron Weasley in the movie series about the boy wizard, will also serve as an executive producer on the TV show, which airs on Sony's streaming network Crackle next year.

Scottish actor Dougray Scott and Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick also have roles in the series.

Snatch is based on the 2000 crime comedy film of the same, which starred Jason Statham, Brad Pitt, Benicio Del Toro and Vinney Jones.

In a statement, Crackle said the 10-episode series would "carry the spirit of the setting in the original feature film, while creating a new world born from the original movie".

Grint, 27, plays Charlie Cavendish - a character described as "frustratingly chaotic and utterly posh" - opposite Scott's Vic Hill and Westwick, who will guest star as Sonny Castillo.

Inspired by a real life heist in London, the story is based on a group of 20-something men who stumble upon a truckload of stolen gold bullion and are thrust into the high-stakes world of organised crime. They are forced to face rogue police officers, gypsy fighters, international mobsters and local villains from London's underworld.

The series begins filming in Manchester next week and is being directed by Nick Renton, who worked on the BBC drama The Musketeers.

Grint recently appeared on Broadway in It's Only A Play opposite Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane.
