Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll to tie the knot in lavish wedding later this month
Rory McIlroy may have missed out on a Major but he’s set to land himself a bride as he tees up for his upcoming wedding to his stunning fianceé Erica Stoll.
But the world number two golfer has joked how it would have liked to have celebrated his nuptials in the five-star Ashford Castle by donning the famous green jacket that was won by Sergio Garcia.
Independent.ie can reveal how he's expected to tie the knot on the weekend of Friday, April 21 in one of the most lavish weddings ever staged, with the guest list reading like a ‘who’s who’ of the golf world.
Speaking after he lost out at Augusta, the Down native (27) said that he was "excited" about the prospect of becoming a married man.
"It’s a great time in my life. It would have been nice to walk down the aisle in the green jacket," he said.
"We’re very excited. It’s a great time in our lives and it’s all about that over the next couple of weeks and I’ll come back at the Players Championship refreshed and a married man and start a new chapter in my life."
The sports star, whose brand is worth more than €400m, now has the best part of a month off from the pressure of playing in tournaments as he relishes the build-up to his big day and enjoys some well-earned time off afterwards.
He’ll be able to put away the clubs until next month when he competes in the Players Championship in Florida, which takes place from May 11-14.
McIlroy has opted to keep the finer details of his big day under wraps but it’s mooted to be taking place next week in the exclusive resort in Cong, Co Mayo.
Obviously a special place for him and Erica, the loved-up pair have rang in the New Year there for the past two years.
Privacy is a key factor when it comes to the historical venue, which underwent a revamp last year and is one of Ireland’s top hotels.
Cashed-up celebrities can keep their entire wedding away from prying eyes by booking out the whole castle and its 83 beautifully-appointed rooms for a mere €70,000 as part of one of its wedding packages.
The Presidential Suite which costs a €4,000 a night and the Hideaway Cottage which comes at a cool €3,500 a night is booked up for the entire week leading up to the wedding.
Considered one of the sports world’s most eligible bachelors, Rory got engaged in December 2015 after he popped the question to former PGA employee Erica during a trip to Paris.
