The actor is positive his son Indio can be helped with his drug issues.

Indio, a 21-year-old musician was arrested in June for felony drug possession.

Iron Man star Robert also battled with addiction earlier in his career, even landing in prison in 1999.

Therefore the 49-year-old can understand what his son is going through and believes there is light at the end of the tunnel.

"He’s his mother’s son and my son, and he’s come up the chasm much quicker than we did. That’s typical in the Information Age; things get accelerated," he told Vanity Fair.

"You’re confronted with histories and predispositions and influences and feelings and unspoken traumas or needs that weren’t met, and all of a sudden you’re three miles into the woods. Can you help someone get out of those woods? Yes, you can. By not getting lost looking for them. Pick a dysfunction and it’s a family problem.”

Because it was Indio's first offence, he was automatically enrolled in a "drug diversion" programme, according to TMZ.

He got off lightly compared to his dad, who after a number of arrests in the mid-to-late-'90s for drug-related charges including heroin and cocaine, was sentenced to three years in jail.

However, he was released after a year and slowly started to get his personal life and career back on track.

"For some folks it’s just a function of age,” he said regarding beating his demons.

“It’s perfectly normal for people to be obsessive about something for a period of time, then leave it alone.”

Robert had Indio with first wife Deborah Falconer. He also has a two-year-old son Exton with his current wife Susan Levin, and the couple are currently expecting their second child.
