Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ed Balls admitted that watching himself on the dancefloor was more traumatic than he expected.

The former shadow chancellor, speaking as he arrived at the TV Choice Awards, said it was difficult to look at his moves as he prepares for the first live show.

Arriving at the awards ceremony with his dancing partner Katya Jones, he said: " I found watching it on the TV really traumatic. I knew it was going to be a bit dad dancing, but it was worse than I thought.

"All the family loved it but I found it pretty traumatic. But the good thing is from now on its only live shows, which means I don't have to watch it any more, I can just do it."

Jones revealed she had recently watched her partner attempt some line dancing and said: "T here's promise, I think. He was better than some pensioners."

She told him: " And you've got the rhythm from the group dance that we did - he picked up the moves straight away and he's got dedication."

However, Mr Balls said he will not be checking Twitter to see the verdict of the viewing public, admitting: " I think it may not be wise."

He added: " I think if we get through the first vote, that'll be a triumph - I'd love to get to Blackpool but I think that might be hard for me. At the moment out there it's not clear that people think I'm going to manage that. And we'll just do our best and see, won't we? We'll just try, give it a go."

The stars of Hollyoaks were the first to arrive on the red carpet with Jennifer Metcalfe, nominated for best soap actress, sporting a gold two-piece of a tied top and flared trousers alongside co-stars Kieron Richardson and Amrit Maghera.

Asked whether she had seen co-star Danny Mac, who is competing against Balls on Strictly Come Dancing yet, Metcalfe said: "No, I haven't!

"But I messaged him saying good luck and everything so I'm sure he'll be fab. I think he's got a good little two-step."

Asked if Strictly was something she would like to do in the future, the actress said: "Maybe. I do love dancing and I've danced since I was a little girl.

"So I wouldn't rule that one out!"

Birds Of A Feather star Lesley Joseph arrived with her co-star Linda Robson for the ceremony at The Dorchester hotel.

Joseph will be competing against Balls and Mac in Strictly Come Dancing and Robson, who will be watching in the audience each week, said her friend will surprise people.

She said: "She's amazing, honestly. They don't believe what a mover she is."

However, Robson said she was not keen to get kitted out in the lycra and sequins herself adding: "I can't dance. I would be the joke one swinging around in lycra or something. You have to know your capabilities, and that's not one of mine!"

This Morning's Holly Willoughby said she would not be reprising her all night partying stint after the ceremony.

She and co-host Phillip Schofield arrived to present the popular ITV breakfast show in January after an all-night celebratory party for the National Television Awards.

Willoughby was wearing the white dress from the award show and Schofield was still in his suit from the night before.

The pair pretended to fall asleep on the This Morning couch and admitted they had been up all night celebrating at an after-party held by Ant McPartlin.

The TV presenter said she "doubted" this evening would end the same way.

She said: "I don't think so. I mean, I didn't plan to do that last time. I doubt it, I doubt it very much."

The presenting duo returned to work today after a few weeks off for the annual holiday.

However, Sherrie Hewson joked that she was going to party all night after appearing on her last episode of Loose Women today.

Nadia Sawalha said the Loose Women would not be out too late as they had the show in the morning, but Hewson said: "Apart from me! I'm out until three!"

Hewson said there had been a lot of tears as she bid farewell to the ITV daytime programme after 14 years.

She said: "It was an emotional day. It was lovely. It was a fantastic day and I haven't really taken it in yet, what happened.

"Maybe I will tomorrow."

Coronation Street star Shayne Ward was also on the red carpet, where he revealed that he is planning to return to music.

The actor won The X Factor in 2005 but failed to make a big splash and was dropped by his label.

He said: "Cath Tyldesley is going to be releasing an album soon and I had the good fortune of listening to some of it yesterday and she sounds amazing.

"So knowing that she's releasing an album, I've been thinking about it and dipping my foot in the water next year and just doing maybe an EP or something."

He went on: "For me, when I first joined Corrie I thought it was either one or the other.

"But without a shadow of a doubt I'm missing doing the music too so I will release something next year, hopefully."
