New Xpose host Cassie Stokes: 'My family were more than happy when I came out'
The newest member of the Xpose team has opened up about the incredible support she received from her family when she came out.
Cassie Stokes (28) from Dundrum said her family “were more than happy” when she came out to them three years ago and thanked them publicly for their support.
“They were very accepting – even my 90-year-old grandma. She was like ‘Are you happy?’ and I said ‘Yes, I’m very happy,’ and she said, ‘Well then that’s all that matters,’” Cassie told the Irish Daily Star.
It was her friend Alice Delahunt who encouraged her to come out, she says.
“It was really difficult. I had my good friend Alice, the director of global social content at Burberry. She is also gay,” Cassie told the newspaper.
“She was such a great support. She came out a few months before me. It was great to have her. That’s why I actually came out at Christmas.”
The former Entertainment Tonight reporter, who returned to Ireland from Canada last year, says she’s proud to be from a country where she can get married and that she wants to have a family in the future.
“I’m very comfortable with myself and I think it’s important to be who you are and that’s what I’m about,” she previously told Evoke.ie.
“I was in Toronto when the marriage referendum took place and I was gutted I wasn’t here. I was watching it from over there and I was so proud.”
“I would definitely stay here long term – I want a family one day in Ireland – and I’m thrilled to know that it would be accepted and celebrated. This is something to be celebrated – and nothing to be ashamed of,” she said.
Cassie is covering for Karen Koster on the TV3 show while she is on maternity leave with her second son, John.
