Mel B had a 'moment of clarity' in deciding to file for divorce against Stephen Belafonte after 10 years
Mel B reportedly had a "moment of clarity" when she decided to divorce her husband of 10 years.
The former Spice Girl (41) is said to have decided to split with Stephen Belafonte after father Martin died after a battle with cancer earlier this month.
The couple reportedly have bee plagued by "blazing rows" over her extensive €40m fortune and their tumultuous relationship has been well documented over the years.
The mother-of-three "reconnected" with her family in the wake of her father's passing, who encouraged her to end their 10-year marriage, a decision which has been well received in her inner circle, according to reports.
"Money was at the centre of many rows but Martin’s passing provided a moment of complete clarity for Mel," an insider told the Daily Mirror.
"For the first time in a decade, she decided to put blood before water.
"It is no secret her family didn’t like him and now she has reconnected with them, Mel is sorting out her life."
In 2014, Mel was forced to publicly deny domestic violence rumours that she was held against her will at her €4.5 million London home. At the time, the couple did their best to quash the reports by issuing a statement and both parties denied all the claims.
The pair wed in June 2007 in Las Vegas. The couple have daughter Madison together while Mel also has two daughters from previous relationships while Stephen also has a little girl.
Mel listed the date of separation as December 28, according to papers filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court.
She is seeking joint custody of their daughter and has asked a judge to deny spousal support to film producer Belafonte.
