Mariah Carey 'blames Scientology as the reason behind her split with billionaire ex-fiancé James Packer'
Did Scientology play a role in Mariah Carey and James Packer's split?
The superstar singer (46) and billionaire businessman (48) ended their eight-month engagement in September, but news only broke last week that the pair had parted ways.
And while neither has shied away from mud-slinging in a bid to control who dumped who and why - both sides refer to an incident on Packer's boat over the summer which was the catalyst for the split.
Sources close to Carey claim it was the casino mogul's business manager Tommy Davis, who previously worked as a spokesperson for the Church of Scientology from 2005 to 2011, caused a wedge between the couple.
Packer was a practicing Scientologist from 2002 to 2006.
Davis reportedly urged the Aussie businessman to partake in the religion's "Purification Rundown" - which the church describes as a "a detoxification program which enables an individual to rid himself of the harmful effects of drugs, toxins and other chemicals that lodge in the body and create a biochemical barrier to spiritual well-being".
A new report in Page Six refers to the boat incident, quoting insiders in Carey's camp who claim the five-time Grammy winner felt he was acting strangely when she boarded his yacht and asked him flat out, "What is going on, are you back in Scientology?"
“Mariah’s manager Stella [Bulochnikov] clashed with Tommy, and she demanded to know what was going on," according to the report.
"James was acting so strange that Mariah asked him directly, ‘What is going on, are you back in Scientology?’ Then she was told by his staff, 'James isn’t well and he doesn’t want you to see him like this, so please leave.'"
The source claims she moved out of him LA home soon after.
But sources in Packer's camp claim Davis wasn't present on the boat and was attempting to control his finances in a bid to reduce the Honey hitmaker's spending.
"This isn’t true. James is not a part of the Church anymore. Tommy wasn’t even on the boat with Mariah, James, and her team this summer, the only time he has met Mariah was in February when he went as a guest to her concert with James," the Packer source said.
"His relationship with Mariah ended because she is a diva, she has an entourage around her, and she’s filming a TV show, which is a crazy world James doesn’t want to be involved with."
In a new twist, Carey, whose divorce to Nick Cannon was finalised last week, is suing Packer for $50m citing "emotional distress".
She is keen to keep her $10m engagement ring after being "blindsided" by the split.
