The blonde who was pictured with Zayn Malik shortly before he quit One Direction is to appear on ITV2 dating series Love Island.

Lauren Richardson, 26, will take part in the revamped show, which sees a group of 12 single men and women sent to a Mallorcan villa.

Photographs emerged in March of t he community sports officer holding hands with Malik in Thailand, and he left the band later that month.

Malik, who has been engaged to Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards since 2013, tweeted: "I'm 22 years old, I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there's a lot of jealous f***s in this world I'm sorry for what it looks like x."

Speaking ahead of her appearance on Love Island, Richardson said: "I met Zayn Malik in a nightclub in Thailand. It got blown out of all proportion. But that's a long story."

Strictly Come Dancing winner and new X Factor host Caroline Flack is presenting the show, but she has admitted her matchmaking skills are not always up to scratch.

She said: "I have match-made before, a couple of times. Sometimes I get it really wrong. I remember dating a guy once and thinking, 'He's not my type', and thought, 'But my friend would like him'.

"So I let her go on a date with him afterwards. She was so insulted though after she'd been on the date with him."

She also said that over-the-top romantic gestures were a turn-off for her.

Flack explained: "I don't like anything too set up, as that can get a bit awkward. I went to a hotel with my boyfriend at the time and as a surprise the hotel gave us our own table in the middle of the bandstand, surrounded by violinists and rose petals.

"Everyone else was eating off the bandstand - it was the most awkward experience."

Love Island launches on ITV2 on Sunday June 7 at 9pm.
