Former Love/Hate star Robert Sheehan has claimed that anyone who votes 'No' in the upcoming marriage equality referendum is "homophobic".

The actor has joined a host of celebs, including Bray's Laura Whitmore, in urging the Irish public to vote 'Yes'.

In a video which he posted to his Twitter page yesterday, Robert said: "Let's face it, if you vote 'no' you are saying that gay people shouldn't have the same rights as straight people and you are basically homophobic. So vote 'yes".

"Robert Sheehan here saying vote 'yes' for gay equality in Ireland and the rest of the world."

Presenter Laura Whitmore has headed up the 'Be My Yes' campaign which encourages those at home to get out and vote for all the Irish people abroad who can't.

Dubliner Stephen Markham and Clare native Siomha Brock, who both live in Vancouver, launched the campaign by sharing a video that asks those living abroad to encourage everyone at home to vote 'Yes.'

Laura, James Vincent McMorrow and The Saw Doctors are all included in the campaign video and, along with their fellow Irish from around the world, they are encouraging everyone in Ireland to #BeMyYes.

"#BeMyYes is an online campaign to give a voice to those Irish abroad who cannot vote in Ireland's Marriage Equality Referendum on May 22," Siomha explained.

Other stars who support marriage equality include Brian Gleeson, Holly Carpenter and Darren Kennedy.

Meanwhile, Cillian Murphy, who is a patron of the NUIG Child and Family Research Centre, has released a joint statement with NUI Galway professor Pat Dolan over the "unfair" involvement of children's issues in the marriage equality debate.

"Divisive negative issues raised in relation to children and their welfare are being used to deflect from the core question in the referendum," the statement reads.
