JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is being adapted for television by Amazon.

The new screen effort will transport fans to the fictional setting of Middle Earth as it explores new storylines preceding The Fellowship Of The Ring, the first part of Tolkien’s fantasy trilogy.

The streaming service has acquired the global television rights to the fantasy novels with a multi-season commitment, which also includes a potential spin-off series.

The new adaptation will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.

Sharon Tal Yguado, head of scripted series, Amazon Studios said in a statement: “The Lord Of The Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen.

“We are honoured to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord Of The Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said: “We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord Of The Rings.

“Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on JRR Tolkien’s original writings.”

Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings movie trilogy, which starred the likes of Elijah Wood, Sir Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom, won a combined 17 Oscar awards, including best picture for the last film, The Return Of The King.
