It was a disappointing night for Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut Lady Bird at the Oscars, as the film failed to win a single trophy.

The film had been nominated for five prizes, including best picture, but was left empty-handed.

Gerwig, who had been nominated in both the directing and original screenplay categories, lost out to Guillermo del Toro for The Shape Of Water and Jordan Peele for Get Out respectively.

Mudbound also left the ceremony without any prizes, despite Mary J Blige making history with her nominations for best supporting actress and best original song.

The film’s cinematographer. Rachel Morrison, who was the first woman to receive a nod in the category, lost out to Roger Deakins.

It was an equally bad night for The Post, which failed to win either of the categories it was nominated for – best picture and best actress for Meryl Streep.
